Rising from the ashes

The suicide of our son, Shayne, is an unbearable tragedy and life altering experience. The shock and despair have been extremely detrimental and excruciating. One wonders how to carry on, let alone survive.

Participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and fundraising for Ontario Shores was a way to channel and focus the pain.  It somewhat helped the anguish and ongoing grief by us doing something positive, by giving back, by empowering and inspiring others to not only challenge themselves, but to make a difference. The opportunity to not only raise awareness for mental health, but also raise much needed funds for Ontario Shores provided an outlet.

Paula Arscott from Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health was exceptional, engaging, and full of encouragement and enthusiasm for the event.  We are grateful to have that support for the race day.

It is important to know you don’t have to experience a catastrophic loss or life altering circumstance to boast in the enthusiasm, physical and mental health benefits of participating in such a worthy cause. Mental health affects everyone and participating in this challenge gives you a way to contribute to your community, to be an ambassador and empower others as well as challenge yourself.

To honour Shayne’s memory, PHOENIX RISING – TEAM SHAYNE was born.  We feel that out of his ashes new life and HOPE has also been born. It doesn’t matter how many times you stumble and fall, what matters is that you get right back up and continue moving forward.

Every member of our team, those who contribute and share in our pain help to raise money for a great cause.  They are instrumental in changing the life of someone who needs a helping hand. I encourage you and everyone else to get involved.

Note:
Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health was selected as one of three Featured Charities from a list of over 170 local charities participating in the Charity Challenge of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon this year on October 18.
